Vaucluse is an eastern suburb of Sydney and is located on the South Head peninsula, with Sydney Harbour on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east. Vaucluse is a mainly residential suburb. For many years, it was the most affluent suburb in Sydney and in terms of houses and properties is still in the top five most expensive suburbs.

Vaucluse is located 8 km's north east of the Sydney CBD and is serviced by State Transit Authority buses.

The first European activity in the area took place not long after settlement, Macquarie Lighthouse was constructed on the ridge, a little south of the signal station, in 1816, having been designed by Francis Greenway, the first notable architect in the colony. The original Vaucluse House, from which the area derived its name, was built by Sir Henry Browne Hayes.
