Edgecliff takes its name from its location because it literally sits on the edge of a cliff. The rocky cliff was extensively quarried in the early day of European settlement. Between 1894 and 1905, a cable tram service ran, unique in this era as the cable ran in a gutter beneath the tracks, the car gripping the moving cable to advance.
