Ashfield is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney and is a suburb with a mix of residential, commercial and light industrial areas. the majority of the area's dwellings being a mixture of mainly post-war low-rise flats (apartment blocks) and Federation-era detached houses.

Ashfield is located 9 km's south west of the Sydney CBD and is serviced by State Transit Authority buses and Ashfield Railway Station.

20 - 29 years is the predominant age group and households comprised of 56.9% family, 28.4% lone person and 7.7% groups.

59.3% apartments, 12.4% semi/terrace, 27.7% separate houses and 0.6% other.

There are seven schools in Asfield, Ashfield Primary School, Ashfield Boys High School, St Vincents School, Bethlehem College, De La Salle College and Trinity Grammar Senior and Junior Campuses.

The first land grant in the area was made to Rev Richard Johnson in 1793. By the 1820s, all the grants had been amalgamated into two large estates: Ashfield Park (the northern half between Liverpool Rd and Parramatta Rd) and Canterbury Estate (the area south of Liverpool Rd). Ashfield Park was named by Robert Campbell, whose father was the laird of Ashfield in Scotland. Now it is known as Ashfield.
